Field Trip at Gallant Farm

Meet Sarah Black

The team at Seminary Hill Farm is so excited to announce that Sarah Black (@sarahsbread) has joined Seminary Hill Farm Kitchen to do all things bread, including building a bread series for our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, developing classes, and hosting field trips and special events to inform our knowledge of bread making and reinforce the mission of Seminary Hill Farm. Make sure to follow her on Instagram so you can stay updated on all her posts about her breads, classes and events.  Her talent is remarkable and we cannot wait to help share her artisan craft with the rest of the community.

 Bread Baking Event Columbus

Field Trip at Gallant Farm

Saturday, Sept 29th, 9am - 11am

2150 Buttermilk Hill Rd, Delaware OH  43015

What:

Our first Seminary Hill Farm field trip will be to Gallant Farm with Farmer Gabe Ross and Baker Robin Mayes. Gallant Farm is on Buttermilk Hill Road in Delaware County and is the perfect place to be in September. This beautiful farm is a part of Preservation Parks and includes a farmhouse with period furnishings, a barn with historic 1890's timbers, a granary, machine shed and barnyard, demonstration crop fields, vegetable garden, orchard, and pond.  If you would like to see charming photos and read more about it, please click here.

We will begin our day at 9 am in the farmhouse kitchen with a demonstration on how to make whole wheat bread, incorporating the heritage grain, Turkey Red. This is the same grain that will be planted on the farm later that morning. The demonstration, led by Sarah Black with the help of Robin, will include an understanding of all of the steps of making bread and baking the bread in the charming wood-fired oven. Each participant will leave with a complete recipe and instructions and there will be an opportunity to sample Seminary Hill Farm’s Whole Wheat/Rye/Honey Bread, along with honey butter. This will be the perfect way to sample this heritage grain before we head out to the fields to plant.

Please note that you will need to sign up for the Farmhouse Kitchen Demonstration.  Tickets are $20 per participant.

Around 10 am, after the kitchen demonstration, we will gather in the barn for an educational talk by farmer Gabe Ross.  During this time, he will cover key topics such as what Turkey Red Wheat is, what heritage grains are, what their health benefits are, and why these grains have become coveted by artisan bakers across the country. We will then tour the equipment shed, head to the fields, and Gabe will model the traditional methods of planting. This September day will be a complete connection from farm to plate and promises to be a memorable experience.

Please note there is no charge for this part of the event at Gallant Farm and kids are welcome!

We look forward to gathering as a community around local food and sharing a beautiful autumn day with each of you.  It promises to be both a fun and educational event. A member from our team will be in touch before the event to confirm the details. In case of bad weather, there is a baking demonstration planned in the farm house.
